Over in quiet Polwarth sits Piecebox, a small cafe with lots of colour. From the outside it doesn’t look too exciting, but once you’re inside, it’s difficult to decide whether you want to look at the chandeliers, wallpaper or the cakes.
Located between Edinburgh Napier’s Merchiston campus and two of their student halls, it’s a prime spot for students, especially at Napier, to stop in for a sweet treat. It’s also a popular cafe for families.
As well as tea, Piecebox offers a variety of cakes, smoothies, and both breakfast and lunch foods.

Every time I visit, I go for the same tea, a green tea with cherry. It comes in a pot, and gives you two and a half cups of tea. The tea has a strong aftertaste of cherry, and is very light and easy to drink. Considering I have the same tea every time, you have probably guessed I find it very tasty.
The pot costs £2, but as Piecebox offers a 10% student discount it brings the total down to £1.8, which is one of the cheapest pots of tea I’ve encountered in Edinburgh.

I have visited Piecebox for both breakfast, lunch and cake (the latter being the most important meal of the day, of course) before, and it has been great every time. The brownie comes in a decent size piece, and is beautifully soft and flavoursome. By far one of the best brownies I’ve tasted, both in cafes and homemade. Both for breakfast and lunch there are plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, so there’s something for everyone.

The cafe doesn’t offer free wi-fi, which can make it a bit challenging to do work there, but the atmosphere and interior make you want to sit down and relax more than anything else. It is a great place for food, meeting up with friends or just taking a time-out and enjoying the colourful decorations surrounding you.
