Pumpkin Brown

Incredibly enough, Pumpkin Brown is a wee café on Grassmarket I have never noticed before, so once I did I just had to visit.

The warm atmosphere inside is a nice contrast to the cold winds of the city. While it is a fairly small café, the large windows looking out on Grassmarket gives it a spacious feel, and the natural light makes it a nice place to sit and enjoy a cuppa and some cake or food.

However, the food served here is a little different from your average café. It is all dairy and gluten free, and none of it contains refined sugar.

After taking a long time to decide between teas with names such as Gunpowder Green and Russian Caravan, or the delicious sounding Orange Pistachio Rooibos I settled on a Chai. Not a bad choice at all, as it was a tasty chai with just the right amount of spices. I even got a free refill! The tea cost £2.5, and considering it came with a refill that is alright even for a student with a budget.

To accompany my cuppa, I tried a slice of chocolate and orange cake. The slice looked quite big and filling on the plate, and was beautifully presented.

It was not as sweet and overpowering as expected, but full of orange-flavour working well with the chocolate.

I did not even realise the cake was vegan and gluten-free, it tasted just as delicious as any other slice of cake. Since there was no sugar in it either, I will even count it as a healthy treat! The cake was £3.75, which is acceptable as it was a fairly big slice and it was well presented.

Overall, I found Pumpkin Brown a great wee café to sit and enjoy a cuppa in. It is nice and cosy, with friendly and helpful staff, and most importantly tasty teas.

As there is no Wi-Fi available in the café, it is not the best place to do work in, but rather a good place to enjoy the company of some friends or watch the world go by through the large windows.
